Artist Statement
My work resides at the intersection of two cultures—African and African American. These cultures overlap, yet are separated by years of falsehoods and misconceptions. Curiosity about African and African American cultures is sparked by my research of their customs and traditions. My creative interests are rooted in the history and culture of these communities. The results are mixed media works that explore the cross-cultural norms, ancestry, rituals, religion, and spirituality which permeates these cultures. I have traveled to Ghana, West Africa numerous times to explore their rich cultural traditions. These experiences have fueled my creative process. The results are multi-layered collages that integrate my own photographic imagery with cultural symbols and patterns abstracted from West African textiles, crafts, architecture, and the landscape.
